Census of the tree lines

The tree-line census is based on literature, web analysis and field surveys.

The landscape, historical and cultural value of each tree line

• Collection of bibliographical and online resources that tell the history and cultural value of Milan’s street trees, followed by the production of a report.
• Identify interference from power lines, buildings, pavements, underground artefacts and more.

It is important to examine the historical documents and maps in order to understand the design of the streets and alleys in the nineteenth century. The Beruto plan certainly needs to be looked at. Photographs/documents be found at the Parks and Gardens Department of the City Council. It is important to compare how Milan has changed, also taking into account the installations made in relation to specific streets or neighbourhoods: Città Studi was characterised by tree-lined streets, like the Bastions, like the outer ring road.

Environmental value of each tree line

Calculation of the ecosystem services provided by the street trees and production of a report describing Milan’s street tree heritage.

• List of all roads, with or without trees and categorization.

• Attached to each botanical sheet: for each single tree species, dimensions of the tree, notes.
